A GARBAGE, Garbage Disposal

Your garbage disposal is garbage and you’re worried that you need to shell out $200.00+ to buy a new one. You’ve tried everything and it still isn’t working…or did you?

You tried to eliminate some food waste and suddenly your disposal shut itself off or started making that weird noise. We all know the sound, but what can you do now? You pulled the gunk out and tried Drain-o, but no luck. You tried resetting the little button on the light socket that resets the electrical things, because it could be that you just tripped the thingy… but have you tried sticking your head under the sink yet?

You might be thinking, “Wait. You want me to stick my head where?!” Just go with me on this.

DID YOU KNOW?

There is a red reset button ON the garbage disposal? It’s everyone’s dream! A red, forbidding button, just begging to be pushed! DO IT. Push the button! You know you want to… and for once, the world doesn’t explode when you do! Instead you reset your disposal and now it is working!

I TRIED THAT. NOW WHAT?

That didn’t solve your garbage disposal woes? Fret not! Check out tip number two! Have you tried spinning the blades with a hex key, yet? No? Great! Do that. In the middle under the disposal, there is a place to insert a hex head Allen wrench. Guess what! It’s right next to the fun red button from earlier. If the blades are seized and don’t move, insert the hex key and twist around and around, this should free up the blades. There is actually a tool for it, but a normal Allen key that fits will work. (Finally, a reason for having hoarded all those IKEA tool sets! You knew it would come in Handy someday!) This should fix the weird problem of the disposal making that noise. Think of this like the following flow-chart:

Hopefully, you did these two steps and it fixed both the noise and lack of blade turning power. If not, it may be time to call in one of our team members to make a house call! We are certified and available to help you in your time of need. We will do all we can to fix your garbage, garbage disposal!

FUN FACT!

You can sharpen the blades by using your disposal to ground up ice. It’s healthy for your disposal maintenance and it is fun to chuck ice into it and listen to it grind, just be careful of the sharp ice shards that may blow back and remember to NEVER stick your hand into a garbage disposal when it’s on. We even recommend going to your circuit breaker panel and flipping off the breaker sending power to your garbage disposal. Even if you think the blades aren’t turning and it seems broken. It only takes one mistake to lose your fingers.
